I'm late to the game for your essay, but I think the problem that I have with ads that depict some kind of futuristic look at the game of football is that they go too far. The sport has a heritage and a pedigree that shouldn't be lost in treatments that shoe a speculative future - its like undermining the sport itself.

I saw an ad that showed a defender cloning into 4 defenders...uh...ok...isn't that illegal in the game? The games rules are sacrosanct and wouldn't evolve to accommodate something like that. Might as well just pick the ball up and run with it. At that point it ceases to be football but becomes something else.

These bionic limbs do not appear to mechanically interface with the body in any way, as they simply replace the pelvis and limbs that attach to it

---

I have only seen this ad a few times, but I seem to remember there being a scene, right near the beginning, where this extension is fitted much like robotic trousers - the body slides into it, more like a suit than a prosthetic. It appears more to enhance what is there than to create any force or power. It perhaps aids the body in selecting the proper trajectory? Like... angles required etc? I don't know. I just thought it would be worth adding here. I am probably incorrect in my assumptions though so feel free to disregard :P

I love this ad with a passion. Those legs just look so damn cool. I want a pair. :D

i wish you wrote more…

I'm still here, so I could always help you out if there was something more you wanted to know.

Also, note that the speed record I gave here was the average speed over 200m. Usain Bolt, at the 2008 Summer Olympics, was running at about 45 km/h at one instant during his record-breaking 100m sprint.

Personally, I wouldn't want to watch a football match that has people on metal legs. Not that I have anything against prosthetics, but because I think it takes away from the nature of the game. Granted, this isn't what the post was about...but still....
